Horse Drawn Carriage Restoration

How’s that for a generic title. Look for more boring titles like that. Not that I’m loosing my creativity but once again everything is all about free publicity. You see I need Google to pick me up on the right subject matter and the title of my blog seems to be what it latches onto first. So watch for many more boring, generic, searchable word titles.

In exchange for that cheesy self promotion I give you this lovely shot from our garden. These are our Purple Cone Flowers which are in constant competition with the Black Eyed Susan’s. The combination of the two is just beautiful. But here comes the dilemma. Obviously this photo was taken vertically. If I turn it upright it will not be in line with my other horizontal photos on the blog. So I have two anal retentive situations on a crash course. Turn the photo upright as intended or line up the photos on the blog? I need to think about this one a while.

The body is mounted in the frame of the Mad Max Road cart. It is looking fantastic.

Here is a shot of the original manufacturers tag. The makers name was Lewis Castor located in Frankford Philad. Obviously from back in the day when the world was not much bigger than Pennsylvania. Frankford is an old neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia.

The striping is now complete. All the ends are closed and the shaft trim is completed.

We are ready to begin upholstery. Over the weekend I made up a new seat frame for the bottom cushion. I made this one from pine framing lumber. Doesn’t really need to be a work of art as it is all covered up in the end. As long as it is solid, square and sits level we are ready to rock.

Like most carriage seats there are irons and other obstructions on the main frame. In order for the seat to sit level and tight we need to notch the cushion frame to allow for those irons. I also placed a bevel on the back side of the cushion frame to match the angle of the spindles.

Here is our little upholstery shop. Right now it’s in a corner of the showroom. Ryanne works in the office and does upholstery work as well so this is a handy setup for her.

Work will begin on the cushions today so we will try to get some action shots as that work progresses.

Hot and humid is the plan for today. We have been fortunate to be getting some nice rain over the weekend and a few hot days for those that are into that type of thing.

Have a great day.

Best!
Todd

You actually make it appear really easy with your presentation however I to find this topic
to be really one thing which I feel I might never understand.
It seems too complicated and very broad for me.

I am taking a look ahead in your next submit, I'll attempt to get the grasp of it!
